Crumb Rubber Modified Binder
SAMI Bitumen Technologies is able to incorporate scrap rubber (crumb rubber) into bitumen to provide a crumb rubber modified binder. The AustRoads binder specifications for these binders are S45R, S50R and S55R. By far the most commonly used crumb rubber binder in spray sealing in Australia is S45R.
As well as these AustRoads spec binders, SAMI Bitumen Technologies is able to supply low modification crumb rubber binders (addition of 5% - 10% by weight). Low modification crumb rubber binders are generally requested where some additional property is required of standard grade bitumen such as providing better aggregate adhesion.
The addition of scrap rubber into bitumen also benefits environmental issues by recycling old car/truck tyres. This method of modifying bitumen has been carried out regularly in Australia since the mid 1970's.
